During every clinic I see at least one patient who explains to me that they use moisturiser as part of their daily regime. I always find they look at me in utter confusion when I try to explain why moisturiser is so detrimental to their skin. We are all taught and conditioned from our early teens that in order to look after our skin we should cleanse, tone and moisturise.
In actual fact, your skin has its own mechanisms to hydrate itself and using a moisturiser will encourage it to do exactly the opposite. Moisturisers in general weaken the skin’s barrier function because they alter the natural function of skin self-hydration. Natural hydration comes from within the body. The only thing moisturiser usually really offers is temporary instant relief. Your skin will feel soothed and hydrated after applying cream but all it is actually doing is penetrating dead layers of skin. It wears off after a few hours and then you want more, despite whether you have paid £5 for Lacura from Aldi or £500 on Crem De La Mer, they all have the same ability.
